Saint Edward’s Appoints Michael Mersky as Head of School
BY A STAFF WRITER (Week of June 4, 2009)

Michael Mersky, who has spent over 31 years as an educator, was named on Thursday (June 4) as the seventh head of St. Edward’s school and will begin his duties on July 1.

Mersky most recently was Chief of Staff at ESF Camps in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. ESF runs a series of summer day camps. Before that he was head of school at Lancaster Country Day School from 1999 to 2007. During that time the school’s endowment increased from $5 million to $14 million, and he led the school’s largest capital campaign raising $13 million.

Mersky said his educational philosophy is centered on the doing right by the students under his direction.

“Children should be at the center of all that is discussed and decided by the adults who teach and mentor our young people in schools,” he said in a written statement. “For more than three decades my work has been more of a calling than any job I could have imagined. And I, along with my family, look forward to a great partnership with Saint Edward’s School and the Vero Beach community for many years to come.”

Ron Edwards, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said Mersky’s track record of academic success and the ability to raise cash led to his selection.

“Mike Mersky has the skills and experience the board had sought in the next Head of School,” Edwards said. “He has a stellar record of collaborative educational leadership, fund-raising experience and a no-nonsense, straight forward communication style which will inspire confidence in all of Saint Edward's constituencies.”

Before Lancaster Country Day School, Mersky was head of middle school at McDonogh School in Baltimore from 1993-1999, head of middle school at Sewickley Academy in Pittsburgh from 1991- 1993, Director of Admissions at the Haverford School from 1987-1991, and teacher/coach/administrator at the Friends’ Central School from 1976 to 1987.

Mersky and his wife, Karen, have two children. Matt is a senior at Lafayette College and Katie is a sophomore at Dickinson College. Karen Mersky is a clinical psychologist.
